CASE STUDY
Building HRDD capacity, Azerbaijan amd Kazakhstan

Overview
Our client is committed to respecting human rights as defined by the UN Guiding Principles.
To strengthen this, we conducted Human Rights Impact Assessments (HRIAs) in Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, and built the capacity of the local teams to own HRDD for their business and its value chain.
Our approach
We spoke with workers on site, their raw materials supply chain and downstream value chain partners, as well as action planning with local management.
We spoke with more than 200 workers to understand their day-to-day experiences and identify actual and potential human and labour rights impacts.
We held management workshops to identify strengths and areas for improvement.
We provided expertise, frameworks, and guidance to support our client’s action plans to address prioritised human rights risks and impacts.
Results
As a result of the project, our client's commitments include:
- a transition plan to move workers off repeated short-term contracts and onto permanent contracts
- reviewing resourcing to address overworking and workers not taking breaks
- training suppliers on HRDD practice
