CASE STUDY
Strengthening HRDD in Brazil informed by meaningful stakeholder engagement

Overview
Our client, a mining company, wanted a clearer picture of human rights risks and impacts linked to its operations in Brazil.
They commissioned twentyfifty and a locally-based consultant to map issues for three regional assets, and to evaluate the performance of the current human rights due diligence (HRDD) system.
Our approach
Working with our local partner in Brazil, we engaged with 170 rightsholders through interviews, focus groups, and community visits. This included workers, contractors, local community members (especially vulnerable groups), NGOs, CSOs and local government.
Guided by issues identified at the three sites, we reviewed the maturity of the existing HRDD management systems
and processes.
We developed recommendations to improve the overall effectiveness of the HRDD system to identify, prevent and mitigate human rights issues in
the future.
Results
Insights from the rightsholder engagement directly informed our HRDD review, allowing us to test the current system’s effectiveness and uncover opportunities for strengthening it.
Our review enabled our local partner to deliver a risk matrix including tailored risk mitigation and prevention strategies.
We delivered four reports: one HRDD Review and three Salient Issues reports.
We delivered a final action plan detailing recommendations for actions, as well as roles and responsibilities, KPIs and timelines, supporting the client to implement the plan.
